Julia Foster Decorative Antiques specialises in original 18th and 19th century painted Scandinavian furniture from Sweden and Denmark. We always have a selection of tables, chairs, sofas, clocks, cabinets, cupboards, wall decorations and other items mostly from the Gustavian period.

The term "Gustavian" or "Gustaviansk" has become interchangeable with "Swedish Style" but the uniqueness of Swedish furniture design goes back well before the popular and collectable French-inflected Gustavian style emerged in Sweden following King Gustav III's return from France in 1784.

Swedish furniture makers had already deleted the most overblown embellishments of the universally popular French rococo style, imposing a typically Swedish discipline using a palette of pale colours. Pastel-coloured ladies writing tables and Mora tall-case clocks are examples of restrained Swedish rococo style.

Gustavian style carried forward the natural restraint of Swedish rococo, creating the elegant simplicity that typifies what we think of today as "Swedish Style".
